As we read CH 19 Pay attention to: • How does Okonkwo prepare to return to Umuofia? • What does Okonkwo’s feast show about his character?
After 19-you may work with a partner to answer • What sorts of stories had Okonkwo heard about White men before? • Why do you think Nwoye has become a Christian? Why does the new religion appeal to him? How is he different from the other converts? • What is the first act of the missionaries which evokes a possible response in some of the Ibo? • Achebe focuses on the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. How does this belief undermine the missionary’s attempts to discredit the traditional religion? • How do you expect Okonkwo’s return to his village to go? Remember he has been gone 7 years. • What event makes the villagers of Mbanta stop their policy of ostracizing Christian converts? • Part two makes almost no mention of Okonkwo’s wives. How do you think they feel about the exile to Mbanta?
As we read Chapter 20 Pay attention to: • What are Okonkwo’s expectations for his return? What does he expect when he gets home? What does he find? • How has his status in Umuofia changed? • What are the changes in the village?
Homework: read Ch 21-23 • Watch for the two missionaries: Mr. Brown and Rev. Smith. • Things really start to fall apart in Umuofia. Watch for how and why this happens and what role Okonkwo plays
In your groups: • Are Okonkwo’s thoughts and expectations about his return to Umuofia realistic? What does he expect? What does he find when he gets home? • What is the mood of at the beginning of ch. 20? What is the effect of the humorous song about the court messengers? • What is the significance of the story of Aneto?
