Matter ANYTHING that has mass and occupies space.
All matter can be classified into two broad categories. • Mixtures – made up of 2 or more different kinds of atoms – no particular composition. • Substances – definite and unique composition.
Mixtures • There are 2 sub-categories of mixtures: • Homogeneous mixtures – these types of mixtures are the same throughout. These do not need to be stirred constantly. Usually clear or transparent. • Heterogeneous mixtures – different parts of the mixture can be easily identified. Need to be stirred constantly. Not transparent
Types of Heterogeneous Mixtures • Colloids: Type of heterogeneous mixture where the particles in the “solution” are large enough to be seen or at least see their effect. Fog is an example. These particles will tend to scatter light as it passes through them. • Suspensions: Type of heterogeneous mixture where the particles will eventually settle out. Muddy water is an example.
Homogeneous Mixtures • Also called solutions. Light passes easily through them with no scattering.
Substances • Again, definite and unique composition. • Elements: Made up of ONLY 1 KIND of atom. • Compounds: Made up of 2 or more KINDS of atoms in a specific ratio.
