Filippo Brunelleschi was born in Florence 1377 and died in 1446 Florence. Brunelleschi spent most of his life in Rome studying domes. When he returned to Florence there was a new prize in offer; the magnificent Cathedral desperately needed a dome. The Dome would have to be self supporting, which no one had ever done before, but Brunelleschi was was confident he could. There was only one problem though, Brunelleschi would need to rewrite the rules of western architecture, everyone knew that there was no guarantee of success, but he came up with his own ingenious and completely original theory which did seem to work. This led him to inventing perspective. The dome of which he built was said to be the greatest architectural feature in the western world. When Brunelleschi died he was buried beneath his towering achievement. He was also the first engineer of the renaissance, and he invented a fast and efficient hoist with the worlds first reverse gear, allowing an ox to raise or lower a load at the flick of a switch! Brunelleschi's ideas and inventions reflected renaissance values, because he invented perspective, which was used in a lot of renaissance paintings and architecture, and arcs were now used to support buildings and not only for decoration. His life was influenced by patrons because they were willing to gamble on his judgment. In 1419 there was an orphanage which was used for a place to show his work. A man called Cosimo was supporting him, also the church was offering him an outstanding prize. Brunelleschi's challenge was bigger and unlike anyone elses. He faced the challenge of building the largest dome and relying on his own theory. He had to trust his instincts knowing that one little mistake could ruin everything. He managed to overcome this challenge and during his process he managed to invent a couple things as well. A way to connect this persons life and achievements to the modern world in that first of all he created perspective which is still used today. Also his dome is still one of Florence's prized possessions.
