  1. Filippo Brunelleschi 1377-1446 “The Dome Guy”

  2. Failure • Started as a goldsmith/sculptor. Lost in a competition (to build a set of doors for the Florence Baptistery) to Ghiberti and switched to architecture.

  3. Rome with Donatello • Traveled together • Donatello studied the statues. Brunelleschi drew sketches of the buildings/sculptures. • Called themselves “the heirs or Rome” • Other artists called them “treasure seekers”

  4. Linear Perspectives • Around 1420 painted two panels to demonstrate his theory of linear perspectives • His theory: all parallel lines in the foreground of painting should converge at a single vanishing point on the horizon. • Pointed out that close-up figures should appear larger than distant ones.

  5. “Brunelleschi’s Dome” • Competition to design a dome for the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. • Designed double dome. • 16 years to build.

  6. After the dome… • After designing dome, worked on more buildings • The Florentine churches of Santa Maria degli Angel, San Lorenzo, Santo Spirito, and Pazzi Chapel in Santa Croce. Churches of Santa Maria degli Angeli
