Henry VIII • Wrote books and composed music • When the pope didn’t want to grant him a divorce, he broke with the catholic church and created the Church of England • Married 6 times, and had two of his wives beheaded
Lady Jane Grey • Became queen with the help of the Duke of Northumberland, because he wanted his family to inherit the throne • Reigned only for 9 days • Was executed along with her husband in 1554
Elizabeth I • Reigned for 45 years • Was fluent in 6 languages • Her reign was known as The Golden Age • Was called, ‘Gloriana’ and ‘The Virgin Queen’ • Never married and didn’t have any children • Was extremely popular and many poems and plays were written in her honour.

James I • Had been king of Scotland for 36 years when he became king of England • Was king during the Gunpowder Plot, which is remembered in England on Guy Fawkes Day (November 5th)
Charles I • Suffered from a speech impedement. • Spend a lot of money on art and paintings, which greatly increased the crown’s debt • Convicted of high treason ‘against the realm of England’ and was executed on the 20th of January 1649

George I • Was born in Germany • Spoke German and French fluently, but very little English • Imprisoned his own wife in 1649 • Had very little knowledge of the customs of England, and left his ministers in charge of the country
George III • Was the first of the Hanoverian monarch to be born in England and the first to speak English as a first language • America gained its independence during his rule • Went mad. His son ruled on his behalf for the last 9 years of his reign • Is the second longest reigning monarch in British History
Victoria • Became queen at the age of 18 • Had 9 children, most of whom married into other European royal families • When her husband died in 1861, she mourned him for the rest of her life • Was queen during the industrial revolution and the rise of the British empire • Reigned for 64 years, the longest in British History
Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1901 – 1910 Name given to the family since Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, was son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha Edward VII 1901-1910

Edward III • First monarch to be a qualified pilot • Was never officially crowned • Abdicated the throne in order to marry a divorced American woman; Mrs Wallis Simpson
George VI • Became king unexpectedly, when his older brother abdicated • Had a speech impediment • Became very popular during the 2. World War, because he and his family stayed in London, even though Buckingham Palace was bombed 9 times • Died at the age of 56 • The ‘King’s Speech’ centres around George VI and his wartime radio speeches
