  4. EFG SCHOOLS • December 2012 – Healthcare, footcare and locomotion school – Whipsnade • March 2013 – Social and Reproductive Management School – Chester • 27th and 28th November 2013 – Behaviour and Facility Design School - Dublin

  5. HEALTHCARE SCHOOL • Reviewed Foot Lesion Scoring System • Reviewed Locomotion Scoring System • Trialled both these systems • This is now ready to be launched • Practical foot care sessions • TB and Herpes workshops.

Social and reproduction school • Captive Social Groupings • Elephant Birth Management • - tethered does not increase dystocia • - each birth individual, multiple factors • - move towards herd births • - NOT a natural situation • Birth Case Studies • Bull Management • +ve and –ve Reproductive Factors

  8. EFG Meetings • Have them at every school to insure attendance. • 20+ keepers at the last one • Re-wrote the management styles section of the guidelines. • Tackle 1 section at each meeting to update. • Drew up a list of minimum health check standards. • Elephant Appreciation Day.

  10. Healthcare Group • Higher incidence of foot lesions in Asians • Only 5% severe. Harris report 21% • Majority of these on front feet • Pain assessment, TB, Herpes, Colic (particularly in Africans), Foot x-rays.

  11. Nutrition Group • BCS finalised and scoring system sent out • Browse books sent out • BCS on a 3 – monthly system to be launched • Individual dietary advice, colic

  12. Behaviour • School at Dublin • Questionnaire - sleep study - assessment of personality • Anticipatory behaviour, social status and interactions, stereotypy studies, environmental enrichment, year long faecal glucocorticoid study, social and reproductive behaviour.

Herpes • Screening of animals with both latent and active infections from varied samples – trunk washes, conjunctival swabs, bloods. • - Attempting to grow the virus to test efficacy of anti-virals and develop vaccines. • - Performing a variety of studies to test what makes latent virus become active. • Research on what makes animals start to shed – shows pregnant animals have increased risk of shedding, but risk to whole herd, not just pregnant animal. • efficacy of drugs • efficacy of disinfectants/bio-security measures • masters study looking at all historical cases, to determine if there are any common factors attributed to emergence, survivaletc. • www.eehvinfo.com
