Good News • Dr. Natalia Osna- UNMC New Investigator award (event on Feb 2 at UNMC DRC auditorium). • Dr. Cyrus DeSouza- UNMC Distinguished Scientist Award. • Dr. Joe Sisson- UNMC Research Leadership award. • Dr. Britigan received 25 year service pin since last update.
Good News • The National Arthritis Foundation awarded its 2014 Lee C. Howley Sr. Prize for Arthritis Research to the team of investigators led by Dr. James O’Dell for work from VA CSP & the publication "Therapies for Active Rheumatoid Arthritis after Methotrexate Failure" in the New England Journal of Medicine. • Introductions • Amy Patten is new Research Compliance Officer • Other good news or introductions?
Hospital news • Monthly employee town hall meetings- 2nd Tuesday of month 2-3pm (O-ECR). • The OIG will be at our facility in March for scheduled visit. (Part-time physicians-expect a check on time cards).
News from local affiliates • The Midwest Student Biomedical Research Forum (MSBRF) on February 28th on CU campus provides medical and graduate students as well as other health professional students the opportunity to present their original biomedical research in either an oral or poster format. • Sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Creighton University (CU). • Cash awards are given on the basis of judging by UNMC and CU faculty members. • Over the past 40 years, MSBRF has grown into an important assembly of young scientists. Regarding Publications • Remember—if you have a 5/8th or greater VA position, you are to list your affiliation with VA regardless of whether work was directly supported by VA. • If work was done at VA or with any VA resources, VA needs to be acknowledged even if authors are not VA employees. • Make sure you acknowledge VA grants when used to support work you are publishing. • Send a copy of accepted publications to Research Office and we will get them to correct place at ORD.

Local Research Service Info • No rollout in January—probably one in March in order to accommodate recent changes in VA Handbook 1200.05 covering human research. • Safety forms are changing to national form-VA form 10-0398 (protocol specific). • IACUC • Tissue Transfer form change- (receiving PI does not have to sign) • Animal Handler’s questionnaire will have some changes • We are going to accept enrollment in UNMC and Creighton Occ. Health programs.
Local Research Service Info • The policy PHARM-014 “Adverse Drug Events (ADE) Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Program” was recently updated. Included in the policy is the responsibility of Research Investigators to report suspected ADE’s for a select group of drugs used in research projects.
Local Research Service Info • New cage washer and metabolic animal cages being installed soon ($ came from VA shared equipment for animals program). • Decommissioning plan for our nuclear reactor has been approved and likely will be occurring this spring.
Local Research Service Info • Joseph Burt-Miller is “on loan” to another department. • Dr. Hudson is also “on loan” to Chief of Staff office for 4 months.
Announcements/Reminders • Upcoming March BLRD/CSRD VA grant cycle—need version to R&D coordinator by January 23? (Wendy do I have correct date) for Feb R&D committee review. • Protocols to committees due on 25th of the month preceding review (except for December). Download your forms from website to assure starting with correct forms.
