Goals • CBS Expectations • Overview of CBS advising services • Other campus advising resources • Fall schedule • Minimum Progress • Preparatory courses & progression • Suggested study plans • Required first year advising • Cohorts
CBS Expectations • Be proactive • UCD General Catalog- familiarize yourself and use! • Orientation Handbook - READ and use information (pages 50 – 57) • Seek help when you need it • If you don’t know where to go, come to BASC • Read your UCD email – at least once/week • For campus and BASC announcements • First year required advising • Class updates • Attend class • Read the syllabus • Actively participate • Devote appropriate time to each class (Carnegie Rule from Dean’s meeting)
Biology Academic Success Center (BASC) • BASC Advising Services • Staff Adviser: • Academic planning & course selection • Work with you to meet graduation requirements (Major, GEs, College English Composition Requirement, etc.) • Can help with academic difficulties • Leave of absence • Petitions & Exceptions • Probation, dismissals, re-admissions
BASC Advising Services (cont.) • Faculty Advisers: Associated with each major and can help you: • Understand the uniqueness of the major • Research options • Assist with graduate school plans and career opportunities • Peer Advisers: Students in the College of Biological Sciences (CBS) that can help you with questions about courses and scheduling First place to go, if you don’t know where to go Located in the Sciences Lab Bldg next to Bio Brew

Other types of Advising • Health Sciences Advising (HSA) & Pre-Graduate Advising • South Hall • Internship and Career Center (ICC) • South Hall • Student Academic Success Center (SASC) • Main office in Dutton Hall • Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) • Corner of Shields Ave and East Quad
Community Advising Network Dr. Renee Lopez Community Advising Network (CAN) rlopez@shcs.ucdavis.edu • Main office 103 South Hall • Some office hours will be scheduled in BASC Community Counselors provide educational support
Planning for Fall schedule Things to consider: • Advanced Placement (AP) credits • Community College Units • Complete lower division courses before upper division • Balance schedule with 2 sciences (maximum) & 1-2 non-sciences courses = 13-15 units • Waitlisted? • Can only waitlist during Pass 2 registration • Make sure you attend the 1st day of class/discussion/lab • Keep checking Sisweb to see if you’ve been added to the class.
Full-time vs. Minimum Progress (MP) • Full-time = 12 units per quarter • MP = 39 per year (average 13 per quarter) • Workload (Wld) classes (example: WLD 41C, WLD 57E) • Count towards MP, full-time status and financial aid • DO NOT count towards graduation unit requirement • Do not appear in registration billing hours, but are calculated in the unit total for the quarter
Lower Division (handout) • Lower division requirements are the same for all Bachelor of Science degrees • MATH (MAT) • 17A, 17B, 17C (or 21AB) • General CHEMISTRY (CHE) • 2A, 2B, 2C • BIOLOGY (BIS) • 2A, 2B, 2C • Organic CHEMISTRY (CHE) * • 8AB or 118ABC or 128ABC+129AB • PHYSICS (PHY) • 7A, 7B, 7C (or 9ABCD*) *Dependent on your major requirements and career objectives
Math series differences CBS majors require MAT 17ABC or MAT 21AB (“C“ is recommended” by some majors) • MAT 17ABC, students are given applications of calculus in problems related to health and biological sciences. • Encouraged if you are serious about continuing in a science or health career • MAT 21AB(C), students derive equations and do proofs • MAT 21ABC is a series for biological and physical science majors • Students wishing to continue into higher level mathematic courses; Chemical Physics, Physics, Engineering majors • Medical/health schools accept either series.
Math Placement • Your placement scores will indicate which math course you are ready to take (see handout - CHEM & Math Registration Progression) • We generally do not recommend passing through MAT 17A/21A due to AP scores. • Example skipping to the “B” level math by AP/IB scores. • Why? • It is better to get a solid foundation and a high grade on the transcript than jump forward • AP classes are NOT the same as UCD math classes • Many professional schools require a year of calculus on your COLLEGE transcript and do not apply AP credit toward that year
Chemistry placement CHE 2A requires you to pass BOTH • Chemistry diagnostic exam AND • Math diagnostic exam (to at least Math 12) • Students who do not pass one or both of these exams must • Prepare to retake in order to start CHE and MAT freshmen year • See math and chemistry department websitesfor dates • WLD CHEM 41C • Take if you did not place into CHE 2A • ONLY offered in Fall quarter • IF YOU NEED THIS CLASS, PLEASE REGISTER FOR IT IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE. YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO TAKE THE CLASS AGAIN UNTIL FALL 2014. You will not be “behind” or jeopardize graduation in four years if you do not start CHE 2A in fall quarter. But we do encourage all of our students to get started in CHE (that includes 41C) and MAT in the first year.
General Education (GEs)Brief overview • Refer to Orientation Handbook • Pages 35 – 37 • OL leaders will discuss • See BASC advisers in fall quarter for clarification • Check transfer work for duplication • EAP courses • CBS English Composition requirement
Study Plan (quarter by quarter) * BIS 98 (cohort) only to be taken in 1 quarter, assigned by your cohort designation ** Suggested GE courses: CLA 30, PHI 15, PHI 31 *** Only add a GE if not taking 3 major courses together (ONLY take 3 major courses if achieved B or above in previous major courses) See handout for other quarter by quarter plans if you did not place into MAT 17A and CHE 2A
Typical major requirements • Courses used to satisfy major requirements MUST be taken for a letter grade (unless offered as P/NP) • Must have a 2.00 GPA in the major and 2.00 GPA in the depth (upper division) subject matter • If you are undeclared you must declare your major by 90 units • BIS major must declare an emphasis by 90 units
Required FRS advising &Cohorts (handout) • freshmen advising • Required during your first year • You will receive an email notification with more information • Important to complete – registration holds will be placed • Cohorts • Purpose • You will be assigned to a cohort by Orientation Group • BIS 98 will be taken in appropriate quarter based on assignment • Fall: Bacteria & Archaea (OL has CRN numbers for registration) • Winter: Ras & Excavata • Spring: Unikonta & Plantae • Watch for Fall reception invitation – mark your calendar Wednesday, September 25, 2013
Quiz • How many units do we recommend you take Fall quarter? • How many major classes do we recommend you take for Fall quarter? • True or False: We recommend skipping MAT 17A/21A with AP score? • Do all students take cohort BIS 98 course in fall quarter? • True or False: Do all first year students have to complete Required freshmen Advising? • Where should you go if you have questions?
Let’s see if you know (answers to the quiz) • 13-15 units (major + non-major courses) • 2 major classes (no more than 8-10 units) • False. We do not recommend skipping • No. It is based on your cohort • True • BASC (located in the Sciences Lab Bldg)
