EASA-HighIWC Final MeetingContext CDP-ROBUST 2D-S CPI Imager PIP Nevzorov & RICE EASA.2011.OP.28 • Motivation to use F20 in addition to G-II • Retrieve in situ IWC on F20 flight level (-50°C, -30°C, -10°C). • Validate the Doppler cloud radar estimates of IWC in HighIWC regions (retrieved from reflectivity and Doppler velocity) using G-II and Falcon 20 in situ data. • And use the validated radar estimates to take advantage of the vertical resolution of the cloud radar to extrapolate the IWC & PSD in situ data (G II & F20 trajectories) for the new icing envelope calculations.

EASA-HighIWC Final MeetingHIWC National Aeronautics and Space Administration Federal Aviation Administration High Ice Water Content (HIWC) Flight Campaign Status EASA.2011.OP.28 • Status in July/August 2012 • Primary Campaign delayed by one year (2013 -> 2014) because workmanship and QA lapses at FTA led to stop work and investigation/corrective action planning • Planning • A/C Modification completed by end January 2013 • Instrumentation checks, calibrations, … (Jan-April, 2013) • Ground testing (April 2013) • Qualification Flights (April-June 2013) • Trial Campaign (Florida, August 2013) • Instrumentation repair/modification period (Sept-Nov, 2013) • Primary Campaign (Darwin, Jan-March 2014)
EASA-HighIWC Final MeetingHIWC National Aeronautics and Space Administration Federal Aviation Administration High Ice Water Content (HIWC) Flight Campaign Status EASA.2011.OP.28 • Status in September 2012 • On September 18th NASA management, procurement and legal personnel visited FTA. They briefed NASA on FTA's financial capability as it relates to its ability to perform the contract. • On September 25th FTA communicated to their employees not to report to work until further notice. • To reduce risk exposure to NASA and its partners all government (and partner) provided equipment at FTA were moved to the fullest extent possible to NASA DFRC for storage. Shipment of equipment started on September 26th. • Note: EASA-HighIWC / HIWC / HAIC meeting held on September 24th, 2012 with the objective to reviewcontingency plan(s) and definewayforward
EASA-HighIWC Final MeetingHIWC National Aeronautics and Space Administration Federal Aviation Administration High Ice Water Content (HIWC) Flight Campaign Status EASA.2011.OP.28 • Status in October 2012 • On October 19, 2012 NASA issued a contract termination notice to Flight Test Associates. • NASA and Environment Canada have secured all equipment on the aircraft including the instrument racks and associated avionics. Some items were not removed from the aircraft (i.e. satcom antenna) as they were too integrated into the aircraft. • Threshold Aviation Group (TAG) ferried the Gulfstream N81RR to the ChinoAirport on November 3rd, 2012
EASA-HighIWC Final MeetingHIWC National Aeronautics and Space Administration Federal Aviation Administration High Ice Water Content (HIWC) Flight Campaign Status EASA.2011.OP.28 • Status in November 2012 • HIWC Progress meeting held on 01/11/2012 • HIWC Progress meeting held on 08/11/2012 • NASA/FAA Top Management meeting held on November 20th, 2012 • No viable options for the G-II, or other NASA A/C, to support a 2014 fieldcampaign • The only viable option for a backup to the G-II contract aircraft is the High Altitude Ice Crystal (HAIC) European Union project Falcon 20 atmospheric research platform pending IKP re-design and additional F/H • Although the Falcon-20 will address many HIWC objectives, the G-2 is also required to fulfill un-addressed or incompletely addressed objectives as defined in Engine Harmonization WG meetings and the HIWC Science Plan
EASA-HighIWC Final MeetingHIWC National Aeronautics and Space Administration Federal Aviation Administration High Ice Water Content (HIWC) Flight Campaign Status EASA.2011.OP.28 • Status in November 2012 • NASA/FAA Top Management meeting held on November 20th, 2012 / CONCLUSION • BothAssociateAdministrators ( FAA- Aviation Safety and NASA- Aeronautics) support the objectives of the HIWC flight researchproject and the continueddevelopment of an aircraft option (the G-II is the mostlikely candidate) for a full complement of instruments to conduct a fieldcampaign in icecrystalenvironments. It ispresumedatthis time thatpathwilltakeat least until 2015 and could have more than one deployment. • The outcome of the Falcon 20 contingency discussions isthatboth the AssociateAdministratorswantsomeadditional information before a final decisioncanbe made

EASA-HighIWC Final MeetingContingency Plan(s) EASA.2011.OP.28 • HIWC position • Two international partners stated that if NASA cannot complete a 2014 field campaign, they do not think their management will support further delays. These partners are critical to the HIWC team success • HAIC Position • HAIC agreed to support the 2014 Darwin Campaign • Associated delay mitigated thanks to further use of Airbus F/T campaign (Darwin, Cayenne, Chile) • Furtherdelaywill not be acceptable
