About the Project • Funded through theLeonardo Programme which is part of the EU Lifelong Learning Programme. • Supports vocational education and training organisations, staff and learners to work together with European partners to improve training, skills and employability.
Project Aims This project was developed specifically to look at: • how vocational educationprepares students for the workplaceand to question • how the preparation meets the needs of employers.
Methodology • Good practice Surveys per partner:- 10 Employers - 50 Students- 25 Teachers
Methodology Contents: • Technical • Foreign languages • Soft skills • Effectiveness of practical training
Survey - Employers FINDINGS • Employers reported experiencing shortage of vocational and technical skills when recruiting • Gaps were identified where there were ‘hot jobs’ (with vacancies) but skills were lacking in the workforce • Technical – varied according to sector • Languages – English most in demand followed by German • Gaps in soft skills identified (communication skills, eagerness to learn) • 51% of employers planned to increase their workforce – good sign for economy
Survey - students • Wide range of Vocational subjects from ICT to metalworking • Main reason for studying their subject was opportunities after graduation (39%)(but a lot from family and friends) • Very few students (10%) had any knowledge about studying in other countries (apart from Lithuania where a high number of students (64%) did have this knowledge) • Opinions on the practical work experience aspects of their learning
Survey - Teachers • Training they receive • Relation to technology • Relation to job market and employers • Practical element of training • Study and work abroad and languages • Soft skills • Ideas for improving effectiveness of training
Student participation • Active role of students • they will answer 2nd survey questions • film the interview videos with employers • present the hot jobs in the market • take part in mobilities • have the chance of seeing good practices abroad and meeting new people in the labour market.
Impact of Project • An E –Guide will identify good practice and gaps in provision • Students – better informed and motivated and understanding of EU picture • Staff – better informed about VET and improved skills • Organisations – improve understanding of VET Good practice – improve their provision and results for students
