1 Peter 3 on Husbands You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
Husbands "Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her that He might sanctify her having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that she should be holy and blameless. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself."
Love your wife as Christ loved the church • Agape love • Does not push his love on us (tyrant) • love because I choose to love • Not because of what they deserve, or what I get in return • Sacrificial Love • He gave himself up for the church • Submissive • Sanctifies • Protects from defilement • Builds up • Involved in the details
Love your wife as Christ loved the church Biblical Marriage is Counter Cultural Inseparable • Divorce was very common in Roman days • Cato, writing about Roman Law, said, “If you catch your wife in an act of infidelity, you can kill her without a trial. • “Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword?” “Neither death, life, angels, principalities, things present, things to come, powers, height, depth, any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom 8 The words mean different things • Love • Head, leader
Husbands Love Your Wives 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and • gave Himself up for her, so that • He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that • He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
Husbands Love Your Wives So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes to provide what will bring • life • growth • well-being cherishes it, to make warm
Husbands Love Your Wives • The wife is not told to nourish and cherish the man. • A man should not see his wife as • the source of provision for himself • a cook • a washer woman • a babysitter • the physical partner. • Man has to see his wife as a treasure to care for…a treasure to care for, to cherish,
Husbands Love Your Wife • How can I minister to my wife? • How can I meet the needs that my wife has? • How can I provide all that she needs? • How can I make this marriage a haven of security and rest and fulfillment and joy for her?” Husbands don’t lead because the wife submits, he leads so she will want to submit
Harmonize“Love Your Wife”and“Be Filled With the Spirit” • You can not do it in your own strength • Take your eyes off your wife, and focus on Him. • Be continually filled with the Spirit (Obey the Word) • Let Christ love, nourish and cherish your wife through you • Thankfully obey • Love is a verb, not a noun
Being Continually Filled with the Spirit is the only hope of success for a husband Being Continually Filled with the Spirit is the only hope of success in a relationship
