By the end of this workshop, you will be able to: • import references into your RefWorks account by using import filters, manual input, RSS Feeds • use RefGet-It to capture bibliographic data from a Webpage • use Write-N-Cite to create in-text citations and reference lists • share your references • know how to backup & restore your RefWork Account
Import by Copy-and-Paste -- Multiple Records from Library Catalogue(1) Library Catalogue • Search Library Catalogue by keywords / subject / author / title, etc. • Save multiple records on results list or Mark individual records on single record display • Click Marked List button to view previously saved / marked records

Hands-on Exercise • From Lingnan Library Catalogue • Search for Author “Hill, Anita” • Mark, save and export all found records • Import the records to your RefWorks account

Input Records Manually • At RefWorks Menu References Add New orSelect the New Reference button • Choose the desired output format in Fields used by (e.g. APA style) • Select Reference Type (e.g. Web Page, Journal Article, Book Whole, etc.) • Fill in the citation information (The fields that you need to fill in will depend on the output style and reference type you select.) • You can also add the reference to a folder, attach a related file, add more information in additional fields • Click “Save Reference”
Input Records Manually: Author format • Surname (last name) first, followed by a comma, space and the first name(or first initial follow by a period) • Each author name must be separated by a semi-colon. • E.g. Clinton, Bill; Smith, John D.

Attachments • You can attach files associated with the bibliographic information stored in RefWorks (PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, JPEG, PNG, GIF and more) 1 2: Select a file 3: Click Open
Import References from RSS Feeds • Locate the RSS Feed you would like to include. E.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10628494 • Right mouse click on the RSS Feed icon or link and select “Copy” to copy the URL. • Login to your RefWorks account. • Select “RSS Feeds” from the Search Menu. • Paste the URL in the box next to RSS Feed URL by right clicking in the box, or using CTRL V and click the "Add RSS Feed' button. • Confirm the addition of the RSS Feed by clicking "OK". • Your feed results will be displayed in a new window. Select the references you want to import into your RefWorks account and Click "Import“.
Hands-on Exercise • Add the BBC Health RSS feed ( http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/health/rss.xml ) to your Refworks account • Then select 3 – 6 new items from the BBC Health RSS feed and import to your Refworks account.
Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (1) • RefGrab-It is a plug-in to be installed to your web browser. It helps to gather web page information to RefWorks. Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (2) 1. Select RefGrab-It within RefWorks under the Tools pull-down menu. 2. Right click on RefGrab-It to bookmark link. 3. Click on Bookmark This Link.
Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (3) e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_reform • To cite a particular web page, first open it in the web browser and then click the RefGrab-It link. A separate window will pop up. • Select the reference and click the Import To RefWorks button to transfer the information to RefWorks.
Write-N-Cite • Write-N-Cite is a tool that allows you to run Refworks in your MS Word. With this tool you can • insert citations to a word document that you have saved in a RefWorks folder • generate in-text citations and bibliographies in a word document. • formats your citations in a style of your choice such as MLA, APA ,etc.
How to Download Write-N-Cite (1) • You need to download and install the Write-N-Cite on your computer in order to use it. • To download Write-N-Cite: • Login to Refworks • Select Write-N-Cite from the Tools menu in RefWorks • Click the Download now button for the version of Write-N-Cite you wish to install • Save the .exe and have it installed in your computer

Login to Write-N-Cite (1) • Write-N-Cite is a Word plug-in that accesses your references in RefWorks to help you create citations and a list of references in a Word document
Login to Write-N-Cite (2) 3. Entry your RefWorks user name and password Remark: It may take a minute or two to download your RefWorks citations
After logged in, click on “Sync My Database” to make sure all your references will be available
Hands-on • Create a document in Word • Login to Write-N-Cite • Add in-text reference(s) • Save the document. When you're finished with the paper, from within Write-N-Cite, click on the "Bibliography" tab on the toolbar, choose an output style from the pull-down menu, then click on the "create bibliography" button.
Share References (1) • Share your folders or even your entire Refworks Database with others You can choose to share a particular folder or whole database to others
Share References (2) Use this URL to share your folder to others Remark: Existing RefWorks users will view a shared folder or database from within their personal RefWorks account. Non-RefWorks users accessing a shared folder or database will have an “anonymous” view of the shared information and are called “Guests”.

Backup & Restore Your RefWorks Account (1) • Allows you to create a file that is a copy of your account that can only be restored in RefWorks. • To backup your RefWorks Account: • From the Tools menu select Backup & Restore • By default, Include References, Include RSS Feeds, Include Attachments & Output Styles are selected • Click the Perform Backup button • Save the file when prompted. If you are not prompted to save the file, click the link that says Click here to save your backup file to download the backup to your computer . The default file will be saved as a .zip or .rwb file
Backup & Restore Your RefWorks Account (2) Restoring will overwrite all of the references in your database. If you need to restore from a back up, please be sure to do so in either an empty database or to an account that does not have any data you want to save. • From the Tools menu select Backup & Restore • Click Restore to expand the restore options. • Click the Browse button to find the saved back up file. • Select Include References, Include Output Styles, Include Attachments and/or Include RSS Feeds as desired • Click the Perform Restore button
