Bell Work • 1. What happens during DNA replication? • 2. Which DNA base pairs with A? • 3. Which RNA base pairs with A? • 4. When does DNA replication occur? • 5. Which structure in the nucleus consists of a long strand of DNA? • 6. What molecule provides the blueprint for protein synthesis? • 7. What is the shape of DNA? • 8. How many strands does DNA have? RNA? • 9. What type of sugar is found in DNA? RNA? • 10. Which bases pairs with G?
Why is DNA considered to be the “Code of Life” • It contains the code for each protein that an organism needs
Gene- specific region of DNA that codes for a specific proteinThe protein is determined by the sequence of bases • What is a gene?
Do all organisms have the same genes? -Closely related organisms have many genes that code for the same proteins. -Organisms that are not closely related share fewer genes.
How many chromosomes (or chromosome pairs) are in the human body? • There are 46 of chromosomes in the human cell! (that’s 23 pairs)
What are the two types of chromosomes that we have? • Autosomes • Sex Chromosomes
Sex Chromosomes • What is a sex chromosome? • Where does each chromosome come from? A chromosome involved with determining the sex of an organism One chromosome is inherited from the mother. Another chromosome is inherited from the father.
What is an autosome? • Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome (it does not determine the sex of the organism) is considered an AUTOSOME.
Exit Slip • King of England, Henry VII, wanted an heir to the throne (a son). His wives only gave him daughters, so he kept divorcing (and beheading some) them and remarrying in hopes that they’d provide him a son. • Based on what we learned today in class, was it the wife’s fault that Henry VIII kept having daughters? • If you lived back then, what would you have told Henry VIII?
