  1. Bellringer • In “The Highwayman,” Bess sacrifices all for love. Think about other fictional figures you know, historical people, or people in the news who have made great sacrifices for love. In your opinion why do people make such sacrifices? Write a paragraph explain your opinion on this topic.

  3. Pairing Activity • With your partner create a “mental image” of the stanza you are given from The Highwayman. • Reflect back on the mental images created through figurative language as discussed in class.

  4. Alternate Version • “The Highwayman” as a song by LoreenaMcKennitt. • Follow along with your poem and mark which stanzas are left out of the song. • The Highwayman Multimedia Version

Assignment • Write a one page essay that compares the song version and Alfred Noye’spoem version that evaluates which one is more effective in telling the story of “The Highwayman.” • Analyze how leaving out three stanzas effects the narration of the story. • See rubric on the back of your Venn Diagram for scoring information.
