Overall Expectations Big Ideas How do different systems interact within an animal to provide the body with nutrients and remove waste products produced by the body? • Analyze the relationships between changing societal needs, technological advances, and our understanding of internal systems of humans • Investigate, through laboratory inquiry or computer simulation, the functional responses of the respiratory and circulatory systems of animals, and the relationships between their respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems. • Demonstrate an understanding of animal anatomy and physiology, and describe disorders of the respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems. • Groups of organs with specific structures and functions work together as systems, which interact with other systems in the body. • The development and uses of technology to maintain human health are based, in part, on the changing needs of society. Essential Question Guiding Questions What is the function of organs in the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems? Where do the different systems interconnect in the body? How do disorders in any particular system, result in nutrient deficiencies or waste removal problems?
Recent Biology Research: The Appendix Has a Function • Historical Case Study: Scurvy and the Discovery of Vitamins Hook: The Digestive Rope & Modelling Peristalsis Course Outline Wet Lab (Part 1): Measuring Lung Capacity Wet Lab (Part 2): Heart Rate vs. Fitness Dry Lab: Blood Pressure Fluctuations in a Day STSE Activity Due:Examining Systems Disorders/Diseases
Category Resource Type Activity
Historical Case Study Scurvy Vitamin C • Given Vitamin Deficiency Case Study, students must: • DEDUCE patient's disorder. • RESEARCH about disorder’s cause. • PRESCRIBE treatment as a doctor.
Recent Research Development The Appendix Has a Function ?!? Part A: Write a letter to a Charles Darwin fan club • Part B: • Answer the following questions • Research about some disorders that may require an appendectomy • Why do you believe people in developed countries remain healthy after having their appendix removed? • What would be the implications of conducting an appendectomy on a person who is living in a developing country?
Hook/Demo Rope Digestive Tract & Modeling Peristalsis
Wet Lab • Lung capacity, heart rate measurement, and fitness • Part 1: • Vital Capacity vs. Height • Part 2: • Heart Rate Measurement vs. Body Weight • Heart Rate Measurement vs. BMI
Safety concerns • Personal health issues • Space • Students popping balloon • Tips • Demonstrate how to exhale into the balloon • Demonstrate how to measure the diameter • Remind students to find pulse’s location prior to proceeding to experiment • Remind students to read the procedures carefully Wet Lab
Interactive activity • Students will collect and share data • Students will complete a mini-lab report, learning how to: • Develop hypotheses • Graph results • Summarize results and observe patterns • Explain and discuss results and patterns • Design experiment Wet lab
