Parts of a Sentence. Every sentence contains a subject (who or what is doing something), and an action (what is being done by the subject). A sentence may also contain an object (a noun that is receiving the action that the subject is performing).

  1. Parts of a Sentence • Every sentence contains a subject (who or what is doing something), and an action (what is being done by the subject). A sentence may also contain an object (a noun that is receiving the action that the subject is performing). • The Cavsbegin their season on Wednesday night. • Can you identify the subject, action, and object? • Peyton Hillis scored his sixth touchdown of the season on Sunday.

  2. Active vs. Passive Voice • Active voice: an action is performed by its subject • EXAMPLE:Tina sent her reply. • Active voice is strong and direct! • Passive voice: an action is done to its subject • EXAMPLE: The reply was sent by Tina. • Always need a helping verb:am, as, are, was, were, been, be, can, has, shall, will, do, does, did, have, should, may, might, being, would, must, could, & had  • Passive voice: OK when you don’t know who performed the action  My Bicycle was stolen.

  3. Active or Passive Voice? • Identify the verb or action that is taking place in the sentence • Is there a helping verb • The quizzes were gradedby Mr. Novak. • Identify who or what is performing the action & make sure it is the subject of the sentence • The quizzes were graded byMr. Novak. • This sentence is in passive voice. Let’s make it active.

Try It Out Are the following sentences in active or passive voice? • Reggie Hodges ran for over 60 yards on the fake punt! • The idea of inventing a time machine was abandoned by Kevin. • The music could be heard by the neighbors. • The girl’s terrible scream shattered the silence. • The story has been reviewed favorably by most students.
