Types of Sentences • Declarative Sentences- States an idea and ends with a period. • Interrogative Sentences- asks a question and ends with a question mark. • Imperative Sentences- Gives an order or a direction and ends with either a period or an exclamation mark. • Exclamatory Sentences- Conveys strong emotion and ends with an exclamation mark.
Combining Sentences • Simple Sentence- One thought expressed in a sentence. • Compound Sentence- To separate thoughts that are combined into one sentence using and, but, or.
Subject • A subject- who or what the sentence is about. • Complete Subject- All of the subject • Simple Subject- The main noun or pronoun.
Subjects • The woman who taught us Spanish last year became vice principal. • The quiz on Friday was easy.
Subjects • Compound Subject- two or more subjects that have the same verb and joined by a conjunction such as and or or. • Compound Verb- two or more verbs that have the same subject and are joined by a conjunction such as and or or.
Predicate • Predicate-tells what the subject did or what happened to the subject. • Simple Predicate-The main verb or verb phrase that cannot be left out • Complete Predicate- Includes the main verb and all the words that tell something about the verb.
Participle Phrases • Participle- is a form of a verb that can act as an adjective. • Present Participle-end in ing • Past Participle- usually end in ed but can sometimes end with nt or en
Participle Phrases • Participial Phrase- a participle modified by an adverb or an adjective. Ex’s • Studying carefully • Sudden appearance • Using a calm voice
Gerund Phrases • Gerund- a form of a verb that acts as a noun. • Always end in ing and function as a noun. • Gerund Phrase- A gerund with modifiers or a complement all acting together as a noun.
Infinitive Phrases • Infinitive Phrase- a verb that has on been cogitated. To grow To run To sleep
Base Words A base word is a word in its simplest form. A base word has nothing added to it. Examples: Do Heat Write Read Pack
Base Words Write the base words. Played Running Reheat Quickly Unhappy
Prefixes Prefixes are added to the beginning of a base word. They change the meaning of the base word. Un + happy = unhappy Re + do = redo
The prefix re means again. Reread means to read again. Rewrite means to write again. What does reheat mean? The prefix un means not or the opposite of. Uncomfortable means not comfortable. Unpack means the opposite of pack. What does unclear mean? Prefixes

Suffixes Suffixes are added to the end of a base word. They change the meaning of the base word. wonder + ful = wonderful rest + ful = restful
The suffix ly means in a certain way. Quickly means in a quick way. Loudly means in a loud way. What does suddenly mean? The suffix ful means full of. Colorful means full of color. Playful means full of play. What does thankful mean? Suffixes
