EFFECTIVE ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP By Ede EgbadekwuOnobu 2019 Heads of Engineering Conference
“THE CONFLICT” Younger Engineers: “They don’t want to carry us along” Older Engineers: “They don’t want to pay attention”
WHAT IS LEADERSHIP Leadership is the process of influencing others to achieve the organizational goals. Leadership is an interaction between the leader, the followers, and the situation. Leadership is the ability to elicit extraordinary performance from ordinary people.
OTHER DEFINITIONS OF LEADERSHIP Leadership is the ability to get followers. Boss says “Go!”, leader says “Let’s go!” Leader knows the way, shows the way, & goes the way.
WHAT IS NOT LEADERSHIP Leadership is not a position, status, rank, office etc. Leadership is not a destination. Leadership is not authoritarian. Leadership is not a cheap talk. Leadership is not for the future. Leadership is not a person. Leadership is not management.
MANAGEMENT VERSUS LEADERSHIP Management is doing things right but Leadership is doing the right things. Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success but Leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall. Management is results focused but Leadership is people focused in order to achieve results.
Management uses management tools of planning, organizing, coordinating, directing etc to achieve set objectives but Leadership uses leadership tools of communication, motivation etc to influence people in to achieving set objectives. PLEASE NOTE that no management success can compensate for failure in leadership.

THE “E TO JU ERU E” LEADERSHIP STYLE • Every effective Engineering Leader would seek to build a team. • He must also realise that each team member has his specific role (load) to play (“look after”). • These specific roles by each team member ultimately add up to provide the excellent performance of the team.
Importance of this Leadership style • It brings out the uniqueness of team members. • It discovers new talents • It creates an environment for younger Engineers to participate and responsible for the actions. • It creates new opportunities. • It brings dynamism into the team
How to achieve this leadership style • By delegation • By Supervision • By Interaction with both great and small within the team • By restructuring • By coordination
ASSESSMENT:CHECKING YOUR LEADERSHIP LEVEL Leadership is in levels. Kindly evaluate yourself and determine your level as we go on. You will surely find the need for improvement. Remember, leadership is not a destination, it’s a process. LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP: Level 1: Positional Leadership. - here, position (authority), may not have influence. - people may not follow a positional leader beyond his stated authority.
Level 2: Permission Leadership. Leadership begins with the heart, not the head. It flourishes with a meaningful relationship, not with more regulations. - on this level, time, energy and attention are on individual’s needs and desires. - People who are not able to build solid, lasting relationships will soon discover that they are unable to sustain long, effective leadership.
Level 3: Production Leadership. - At this level, good things begin to happen. Profit increases, morale is high, commitment, punctuality etc high. Needs are being met. Goals are achieve. - Followers here are result oriented. Level 4: People Development. - One way to spot an effective leader is that somehow his people consistently
demonstrate superior performances. - A great leader is great, not because of his power but because of his ability to empower others. - Loyalty to the leader reaches its peak when the follower has personally grown through mentorship of the leader.
Level 5: Personhood Leadership. - Most leaders don’t attain this level, why? Only a life time proven leadership will allow you to sit at level 5 and reap the rewards that are eternally satisfying. It is achievable!
THANKS FOR YOUR KIND ATTENTION
