Opener • Pick up handout out for today and update TOC (table of contents) • Have Homework out and ready for Ms. Callahan to collect • ON THE HANDOUT list all the technology you use today… (ex. Smart phone…) • Brainstorm positive AND negative consequences
Inventions and Consequences • (Then and Now)
Video Clip • Watch the following video and add to your list of positive and negative consequences of technology today in the classroom • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGCJ46vyR9o&feature=related
Group Discussion • Do you think these positive consequences were indented or unintended ?
Eli Whitney’s Plan • He didn’t like slavery • He wanted to make it easier for slaves to clean cotton. • He wanted to rent this machine so he could make a lot of money. • So….what happened?
Did slavery decrease? • Over the next few slides, you will see several maps listing the population of slaves in the South. • Notice the location and number of slaves.
Describe what happened to the population of slaves in the South after the invention of the Cotton Gin.
Putting it all together… • Discuss and write…. • What effect did the Cotton Gin have on: • A. Slave owners • B. Farms in the South • C. Westward Expansion (and therefore native peoples in the South) • D. Slaves? • WERE THESE INTENDEND UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES?
Key Points • Inventions that will change the nation in major ways in the 1800s (19th Century) • Some of the changes surprise those living through the times, even the inventors • These changes led to new opportunity and new conflict.
Final Reflection: Inventions • Should inventor or society be held accountable for unintended consequences of inventions (positive or negative) • Does society have a moral responsibility to think about possible unintended consequences…
