Opener • Read the handout – REALISM and Answer the following questions: • What is Realism? (Use your words) • Where did Realism first start (country name)? • What types of themes are used in Realism for visual arts? • Why can art never be truly “realistic”? 5. How might Realism be portrayed in the theatre? (topics, subject matter, popular ideas of the time period 1850-1900) 6. What technologies affected Realism and how? 7. What three factors “shaped” the art of Courbet? 8. What is the art movement that follows realism?
Realism • 1850’s • Aimed to give truthful/objective view of the world • Show society as it really was • Artist seen as a scientific observer of detail
Gaustave Courbet • 1819-1877 • French • Father of realist movement • Famous works: -Burial at Ornans -Interior of My Studio • Controversial works: -Origin of the World -The Sleepers (almost pornographic)
Burial at Ornans Why is this work controversial?

Edouard Manet • 1832-1883 • French • Painted modern-life subjects • Made transition from Realism to Impressionism • Famous works: -The Luncheon on the Grass -Olympia (these were controversial, can you tell why?) (these paintings mark the beginning of modern art)
Henrik Ibsen • 1828-1906 • Norwegian Playwright • Controversial topics – STD’s, marriage, roles of women in society • Famous work: -A Doll’s House (Page 380-read from book-discuss)
G.B. Shaw • 1856-1950 • Irish Playwright • 60+ plays • Nobel Prize 1925 in literature AND an Oscar in 1938 for Pygmalion • advocated socialism and women's rights
Pygmalion Why could Professor Higgins be classified as a jerk?
Instructions for group work: 50 points • Get into groups of five • Choose a reading from the packet-you are the expert on this person! • List notes: Keep it simple and concise! • Name of artist and medium • Significant works • Importance to the art world (why do we talk about this artist) • Importance to society (what ideas did they challenge in the general population-morals, decency, values, etc.) • Share with others in your group so you have notes on all five artists. • Turn in – you have 20 minutes to complete this task.
