Note-Taking 101. One way to take good notes that’ll help you learn and remember stuff. Your notebook looks a little something like this. A bunch of blue lines. One red line. A whole bunch of empty white space.

  1. Note-Taking 101 One way to take good notes that’ll help you learn and remember stuff.

  2. Your notebook looks a little something like this A bunch of blue lines. One red line. A whole bunch of empty white space. So how do you fill it up with notes that make sense and help you learn and remember the stuff that you’re studying? One very important thing about taking notes: it is supposed to make your job as a student EASIER! It is a little work, but good notes will save you come test time. There are a bunch of ways to go about note-taking. I’m going to show you one that I use. It is simple and effective. But remember, this isn’t the ONLY way to take effective notes.

Or both) - Main Idea: _____________ - Anything else that seems important (this is the tricky part) (Leave a few lines between sections in your notes. This is where you’ll make “notes on your notes” when you review them.) Page # Section heading 2 - Vocabulary words & definitions (often highlighted or in bold.   4. So here’s how I do it…. Follow along in your notebooks, And we’ll have today’s notes done When we’re finished.

  5. CHAPTER: 2 SECTION: 1-Hunters and Gatherers DATE: _____ Introduction Page # 52 • Vocabulary • Descendants: Children’s children • Main Idea: • First modern humans lived in eastern/southern Africa more than100,000 years ago. • Descendents migrated slowly to other parts of the world

CHAPTER: 2 SECTION: 1-Hunters and Gatherers DATE: _____ Living and Working Together Page # 52 • Vocabulary • Bands: Small groups of people / made up of related families / about 30 people. • Consequences: results • Extinct: having died out. Example: mammoths and mastodons • Technology: the use of knowledge and skills to make work easier. • Main Idea: • Most early people lived in bands that moved around a lot to find food. • Women usually gathered (Gatherers) wild fruit, nuts, seeds & roots for the people to eat while the men hunted (Hunters) for meat. • Over time, they learned to use materials such as stone and bone to make tools, which made their lives easier. • Other information: • They learned to work in teams to hunt. • Because they were always on the move, they didn’t have permanent homes.

CHAPTER: 2 SECTION: 1-Hunters and Gatherers DATE: _____ Early People on the Move Page # 54 • Vocabulary • none • Main Idea: • Early people began moving as the bands grew larger and they followed game. • It was very slow / about 2-3 miles every 20 years. • The Ice Age made it possible for them to cross continents, but also made them have to adapt to harsh living conditions. • Other information: • Some people used rafts to move between continents • The Ice Ages sometimes helped people’s migration by uncovering land / sometimes blocked their migration by glaciers blocking their paths.

CHAPTER: 2 SECTION: 1-Hunters and Gatherers DATE: _____ Early Cultures and Societies Page # 56 • Vocabulary • Artifacts: objects made by people. • Specialize: each person does one thing, based on their skills & knowledge. • Culture: a group of peoples’ unique way of doing things • Society: organized group of people w/ shared customs, traditions, and ways of life. • Main Idea: • As early groups of people spread apart, they began developing different ways of doing things. • Early people began to develop spoken language to communicate & educate • They also began to specialize as the groups got larger.

  11. And that’s how I would have taken notes on this lesson Do you think I got all the important parts? Is there anything you would have included that I missed? The most important thing about note-taking is that it is a personal system of recording information. That works for you. If this system isn’t perfect for you, change it.
