Novellas • Anthem by Ayn Rand • Focuses on the collectivist ideals of society as lived by the author in communist Russia • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho • Portuguese author who eloquently shares the dreams of young men while emphasizing the necessity for bildungsroman in the setting of Spain, Morocco and the Sahara Desert. • The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros • A lovely collection of vignettes strung together in the heart of a Mexican-American writer who struggles to surpass cultural norms.

Novels • Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse • This novels allows for an expansive education on eastern cultures and religion rich in the colors of Nepal and India • Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe • Africa is a continent of strife and struggle and Achebe clarifies the archetypal necessity for tribal values amongst a vastly changing modern society
