1. Background and motivation • Turning point in history: perceived uncertainty • A new right wing populist movement is present in 14 federal state parliaments and the German Bundestag • Although the majority of people in Germany are very accepting of diversity, the public debates have shift to the right • The Diakonie observes the attempt to play off people who are dependent on social solidarity • Promoting democracy and civic engagement in a diverse society is stressed as an important focus of the Diakonie • Diakonie Germany sets up a new department for „Engagment, Democracy, Civil society“ Pilotproject “Shaping diversity - Resisting exclusion”, Diakonie Deutschland

2.2 Curriculum A curriculum is developed to train and empower employees and volunteers of the Diakonie • Participative development process: A project group with experts from different professional and regional associations and academies of the Diakonie is set up • Content: • Theory: e.g. populism and extremism, group-focused enmity, radicalisation processes, discrimination, democracy education • Practical excercises: e.g. workshops on argumentation against populism, on discrimination and self-reflexion, case-by-case analysis, methods for democracy work in commuities and neighbourhoods Pilotproject “Shaping diversity - Resisting exclusion”, Diakonie Deutschland
2.3 Democratic networks Networks within Diakonie and church and to other civil society groups are strengthened during the project period • Panel- and networking events at federal and EU-level • Empowerment of actors and groups in communities and neighboorhoods • development of a „democracy kit“ • Kit is tested by local actors in self-organized discussion events Democracy Kit creativ common Pilotproject “Shaping diversity - Resisting exclusion”, Diakonie Deutschland
