“I guess I worked for 15 years before I realised that management is there to help you. I always thought that management was a punishment from God.” 1999 It seemed that some managers helped their people to do their jobs and other managers didn’t. then I remembered Philip Crosby’s Quality Man video
If Quality Sustainability Then Sustainability is all about conformance to requirements
On page 3 you will notice two questions: • Who challenges the sustainable way and why do they do so? • How can these challenges be overcome? At the end of my presentation you should be able to answer these in your own words.
Story-line Position Conversation Storyline: Sustainability must be dealt with. Position: Your authority to take action. Speech Acts Speech Acts: Use of illocutionary force. Positioning Theory We need to deal with sustainability issues by speaking with people.
Local System of Rights Duties & Obligations Public & Private Actions Local Moral Order The other part of my framework is mood. Mood is composed of: • Rights • Duties • Moral Order • Actions You could say that mood is a description of culture.
Local System of Rights Duties & Obligations Public & Private Actions Local Moral Order I believe that: • The reality we communicate within is created by ourselves and others. • We each have an ability to alter that reality.
Two people meet – speak – impose their view. Each conversation has an impact on reality. Cumulative impact. 100,000 people SLF … So What?
Local System of Rights Duties & Obligations Public & Private Actions Local Moral Order How do you feel if you sit at a table that wobbles? Do you try to level off one leg – fold a piece of cardboard and stuff it under the shortest leg? Align mood by adjusting one of the four components.
Local System of Rights Duties & Obligations Underlying Mood Public & Private Actions Local Moral Order Self Other Moral Agent Moral Agent Underlying Mood Knowledge (truth) Knowledge (truth) personal force personal force Story-line (ethics) (ethics) Positions Conversation Speech Acts Field of Power CEOs who deal with sustainablility well Clearly understand mood align the mood by adjusting one or all of these four components. They speak with people.
The interaction of each of these components generates a social phenomena: I call it a mood I only have 50 minutes today. So, I will only discuss Rights Rights is most important – get that correct and …
Rights People perceive they have certain rights. Problem if rights are at odds with organisation. Leaders challenge inappropriate rights. The system …!
What do people think they can get away with doing in order to maximise their remuneration? Leaders need to notice the current situation. Leaders need to envisage a future state of affairs and then attract others to that vision. What about the recalcitrants? If recalcitrants are let alone the sustainable way will not happen. If the system continues to reward people for not following the sustainable way then the sustainable way will not happen.
On 30 January The Age reported: “The commission of inquiry probing … murky deals … has revealed further details … to show … a culture of kickbacks.” The recent Cole Inquiry into bribery and corruption The system – underlying mood – rewards kickbacks. People will lose money if they do not accept kickbacks. Should people have the right to accept kickbacks?
