Refocusing Instruction – a paradigm shift RtI is most often identified as a three-tiered approach (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3) a way to integrate educational problem-solving school wide documenting students’ response to successive levels of instruction and targeted interventions
RTI – components • Universal screening for students in reading and Math • Research-based interventions for struggling students • Three or more “tiered” interventions that provide progressively more intensive intervention • Frequent progress monitoring in each intervention tier • Data-based decision making
Tier 3 – customized learning intervention, very specialized supports for children with the most severe learning difficulties – intense individualized supports to ensure literacy success Tier 2 – Strategic intervention – key is to rapidly identify an intervention strategy and take action – increased intensity and time students spend on literacy and numeracy tasks – increased scaffolds and supports Tier 1 – instruction in the everyday classroom – scientifically-based quality instruction – differentiation and Universal Design for Learning – Key is regular progress monitoring
