John Cartier • Born in Brittany, France in 1491 • Made three voyages to North America • Looking for gold, spices and the “Northwest Passage” to Asia • 1st Voyage—Explored Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in 1534 • 2nd Voyage—Explored the area of present-day Quebec and Montreal in Canada • 3rd Voyage—set up a permanent settlement at present-day Quebec
