Religion • Bishop Francois de Montmorency-Laval – First bishop to New France • Mission: to strengthen church in New France (Theocracy) • Education for priests and general public • Organized the areas of New France into sections called parishes
Government • Governor – appointed by King to oversee running of colony • Louis de Baude (Comte du Frontenac) was the first governor • Mandates include: • Increase population • Decrease the influence of Jesuits • Continue expansion west
Government Continued… • Intendant – appointed to look after day to day affairs • First Intendant (under this structure) – Jean Talon • Talons mandates: • Increase military • Increase population • Decrease reliance on fur trade
The Story • Military presence increased • Thousands of French troops • Development of militia for men from 16 to 60 • Used this opportunity to attack the Iroquois • Defeated Iroquois and peace treaty was signed
Population • The presence of the military increased population but still the imbalance of men to women • Talon introduced: • Les filles du roi • Financial incentives to get married and have children • First census in New France
Industry • Talon encouraged: • Development of farming • Ship building • Iron works • Breweries • Shoe Making • Decreased reliance on Fur Trade
Meanwhile… • Frontenac • Expanding west • Had Fort Frontenac built • Encouraged Brandy Trade • Much to the dismay Talon and Laval • Recalled to France • Replaced by Joseph Lefebvre de la Barre
La Barre created La Compagnie du Nord to compete with the Hudson’s Bay Company of Britain • Relations with the Iroquois broke down • Iroquois attacked the settlement of Lachine in 1689…with the help of the British • Frontenac asked to go back and solve the problem • Organized a force of over 2000 soldiers and allies • Raided Iroquois villages • Fighting continued for 5 years only to end in another peace treaty (1701)
