Let’s Recap • Champlain determined to set up a monopoly on the fur trade for $$ to take back to France. • Champlain establishes a habitation at Quebec and joined forces with the Hurons. • Champlain not interested in a permanent settlement but other countries were and France soon followed.
The Company of Hundred Associates took over the habitation in Quebec backed by Cardinal Richelieu. • France’s colonies began to expand into the “the thirteen colonies”. • More and more missionaries from France accompanied settlers in attempt to convert the “infidels”
A new group of priests, the Jesuits, now tried to convert the Huron as other missionaries failed. • France still wanting to keep a close relationship with Native peoples and sent coureurs de bois (runners of the woods)
