  1. New France Fans Out The French make their home in North America.

  2. Background information of events that helped shaped French migration into North America. • King Louis XIV was the leader of France from 1643-1715 • He reigned for over 72 years. • He oversaw the expansion of France into North America.

  3. What did North America have that the French wanted? • The fashion rage in Europe was the beaver hat. • North America had an abundance of the big-toothed animal. • The French aligned themselves with the Indians to help guide them to areas where beavers live. • This went against many Indians beliefs.

  4. In class assignment (3minutes) • Name 4-5 animals who are endangered of being extinct or are extinct. • Was it caused by fashion or profits to be gained?

  5. Pursuing the buck-tooth beaver created a unique situation with the French and Indians. • Linked the French and the Indians together with a common goal. • Indians and French hunted the beaver along side each other. • Traveling great distances they spent time together getting to know each others cultural differences. • The French hikes, made snowshoes and learned to paddle a canoe great distances.

  6. What did the Indians or French add to our society today? Other than what we discussed yesterday.

  7. Catholic Influence • The French Catholics tried to convert the Indians. (Like the Spanish) • The Indians preferred the fur trappers and their ‘wild ways’ over the Jesuits.

  8. Other Frenchmen who came to North America. • Antonio Cadillac-founded Detroit and named it “The City of Straits.” • LaSalle named the area where the Mississippi meets the gulf Louisiana after King Louis XIV
