Italian Education System • The Italian Education Sistem is divided in two cycles. The first cycle is divided in two parts: • the primary Education that includes the Primary School (6-10 years) • the Secondary Education that includes the Middle School (11-13 years) and the High School (14-18 years) • The second cycle includes the High Education that includes the University (+19 years)
Nursery school (3-5 years) This school isn’t compulsory. At this school you play every day and your teachers prepares you for the primary school. This school lasts for three years.
PRIMARY EDUCATION • The Primary School, before the Moratti Reform of the elementary school, is the institution representing the primary education in Italy. Previously it was divided into two cycles, two years and three years, with a final exam for the completion and access to Secondary Schools. The Moratti Reform divided the Primary School into three cycles, a single year and two-year periods, and the final exam was abolished. During the primary School history two teaching modules have followed: the single teacher and the teaching module.
PRIMARY EDUCATION • The single teacher was in use until 1990 before being abolished by opening a parenthesis of some years before the sperimentation and then replaced with a group of teachers (3 for 4 for two classes or three classes), called “learning module”. With the Gelmini reform the figure of the single teacher is re-approved. With the legislative decree 59 of 2004 in application of the Moratti law, a new figure comes out: the tutor: a figure of guidance, counseling, tutoring for each student, in order to reach a degree
SECONDARY EDUCATION • First grade • The Secondary School of first grade, previously Junior High School, is the institution that represents the first grade of secondary education. Until 2003 you could enter the Middle School with the primary license (now abolished). The middle school was born in 1965 with the unification of the gymnasiums, which gave access to the high schools, the technical schools and vocational schools. From that moment it was called unified Secondary School.
SECONDARY EDUCATION • The week timetable of the secondary level first grade school consists of two planes per week: one of 30 hours (normal time) and one of 36 hours (longer term). Only English was established in a fixed number of 99 annual hours (3 hours per week) and for technology 66 hours per year (2 hours per week). The subjects studied are (on average): Italian (6 hours per week), History and Geography (with Citizenship and Constitution) (3 hours), study in literary subjects (1 hour), Mathematics (4 hours), Science (2 hours) Technology (2 hours), English language (3 hours), Second Community language (2 hours), Art and Image (2 hours), Music (2 hours), Physical Education (2 hours), the Catholic religion or alternative activities (l hour). Recently a Musical Course has been experienced, in which pupils are chosen in a limited number with the faculty of study a musical instrument for which at the end of the cycle there is an examination.
THE SECONDARY SCHOOL AND THE HIGH SCHOOL The secondary school degree, previously high school is the second degree of secondary education. At the secondary school is accessed after obtaining the license of school at the end of secondary school degree. The school secondary level is divided into three types of institutions: high schools, technical institutes, vocational institutes. High school For high school means a type of school in second grade whose goal is to train the student in the academic and prepare it to universities and instruction of third degree rather than enter it directly in the work. The name of the high school remembers the Lyceum founded in 336 BC by the greek philosopher whose name in turn derives from the dedication to Apollo Licio. Each high school has a duration of 5 years divided into two two-year periods and a fifth year.
