  1. Building Mesopotamia Mesopotamia OBJECTIVE: Through collaboration and planning, you will rebuild an ancient city of Mesopotamia LEARNING TARGETS: You will use this project to gain a better understanding of how these great city-states were laid out and why they were designed/built as they were (spatial perspective!). You’ll also, in some way, represent a major innovation of the civilization whose city you are constructing. • The Details: • Each CLASS PERIOD will be responsible for building ONE city • Within each class, each TABLE GROUP will have a specific building or buildings that they are responsible for constructing • Buildings that need to be constructed include: Ziggurat (if one existed), City Wall, Houses, Marketplace, Canals, Palaces, Temples (if no Ziggurat), Major Innovation • Your city should also include space for farmland and irrigation • The Resources: • You have a wealth of resources available, as many of these great city-states can be found online as can examples of the various buildings you will build • Materials to construct the buildings will need to come from you. Look for things around the home that can be used, such as cardboard, shoe boxes, Legos, blocks, etc. • -- Over -- An example of a city layout, this was the city of Ur

  2. Building Mesopotamia Mesopotamia • The Plan: • Class will be assigned its city and each table group will receive it’s building assignments • You will then need to decide on roles for each team member • ONE person from each group will be chosen as a Council Member • Council Meetings will convene to determine the city layout; First meeting will be used to determine how much space will be allocated for each table group’s building needs • You will be given ONE day in the computer lab to research your city and the specific building/buildings your table is responsible for constructing • You will be given no more than TWO days in class for project work, and possibly 10 minutes on any given day at the end of class • The Product: • The city can be laid out as buildings are finished, it does NOT have to happen all at once • You will be graded on the completion of your table group’s buildings • Each class period MUST have its city completed by Thursday, September 26 • The Cities • Nineveh (Assyria) Kish (Sumer)Babylon (Babylon) • Akkad (Sumer/Akkadia)Assur (Assyria) Uruk (Sumer) A section of houses in the city of Kish in the Sumerian Civilization Ziggurats like this one in Nineveh existed in Sumeria, Babylon and Assyria
