Continuing Implementation and Development of MPTS (1) • In its present configuration MPTS has 30 spatial channels and a nominal time resolution of 60 Hz determined by two 30-Hz Nd:YAG lasers • Ten of the spatial channels (phase 3) require special attention and calibration work • Difficulties partially caused by optics de-centering • Cannot use standard calibration techniques and had to rely on ensemble average techniques MPTS 5-year Plan Ideas 1/2 Benoît LeBlanc
Continuing Implementation and Development of MPTS (2) • Phase-3 channels • Rebuilt a subset of the GA polychromators • Verify effectiveness of repairs • Apply repair to rest of GA polychromators • Viewing optics polarizer • Design and install polarizer at viewing window • Prevent saturation of detectors and improve dynamic range of MPTS operation • In situ calibration • Design and install calibration source on MPTS alignment probe • Needed for lithium evaporation “hardening” MPTS 5-year Plan Ideas 2/2 Benoît LeBlanc
Continuing Implementation and Development of MPTS (3) • Laser delivery optics • Improve beam steering optics • Install feedback loop to maintain alignment • Long term stability of optical system has deteriorated – building vibration, HVAC shutdown… • MPTS can be expanded to about 45 channels • Most likely continue present approach: one spatial channel per polychromator • Can also provide test bed for NCSX TS system • Consider developing multi spatial-channel polychromator • 90-100-Hz operation • Upgrade existing 2 lasers to 50 Hz or acquire 3rd laser • Consider active beam combining MPTS 5-year Plan Ideas 3/2 Benoît LeBlanc
