Equilibrium Beginning: The state of relative peace before the protagonist comes into conflict. End: The state after the conflict is resolved.
In media res “In the midst of things” Beginning a story in the middle, after the conflict.
Flashback A means of presenting events that occurred before the first scene of the story
Complication • A disruption to the state of equilibrium that sets the story in motion. • Usually a conflict between the protagonist and an antagonist or other force. • Four universal complications • Man vs. man • Man vs. nature • Man vs. society • Man vs. himself
Rising Action Subsequent events after the complication that build tension.
Climax The point in the story where the conflict is decided. Not always the emotional high point of the story.
Resolution • Also called the denouement or catastrophe. • Denouement: the unraveling or untying of the complexities of a plot • Tragedy: • Catastrophe leading to catharsis • Reversal of fortune • Comedy • Protagonist’s situation is better than at beginning. • Something that was lost is restored.
Epiphany Climax of the story occurs when the protagonist attains some kind of insight. Relocates dramatic center to protagonist’s mind Anticlimax: the complex is solved by the trivial
