  2. 1.6 Translating Problems into Equations • Steps to solving word problems: • Step 1: • Decide what the unknowns are. • Decide what the facts are. • Step 2: • Choose a variable for one unknown. • Write an expression for the other unknown using the variable and one of the facts. • Step 3: • Use the other fact from the problem to write an equation.

  3. 1.6 Translating Problems into Equations • The number of items on two grocery lists differs by 7. • The total number of items is 33. How many items are on each list? • Step 1: • The unknowns are the amount of items on each list • Step 2: Use sentence (1). • Choose a variable: Let x be the number of items on one list. • Then ________ is the number of items on the other list. • Step 3: Use sentence (2). • Write an equation: ____________________

  4. 1.6 Translating Problems into Equations Examples: A wooden rod 60 in. long is sawed into two pieces. If one piece is 4 in. longer than the other, what are the lengths of the pieces? • Skip had eight fewer job interviews than Bob. • Together they had 20 interviews. How many interviews did each have?

  5. 1.6 Translating Problems into Equations • The height of a tree is one fifth times the height of a building. If the building is 150 m taller than the tree, how tall is the building? • The length of a rectangle is four times its width. If the are 48 square units, find the dimensions of the rectangle.

  6. 1.6 Translating Problems into Equations • The Ravens won three times as many games as they lost. If they played 20 games, how many games did they win? • Homework: • Pg. 24 Problems #13 – 18
