Why Collaborative Learning? Why do you think working together (collaboration) is an important skill? What would students benefit from working together?
Some of the Benefits of Collaboration • Students can clarify and organize their ideas well enough to verbalize them to others. • Students have opportunities to elaborate on what they have learned. • Students are exposed to the views of others – views that may reflect a more accurate understanding of the topics under discussion. • Students discover how people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds may interpret the world in different but valid ways.
Why Telecollaboration? Then, how would ICT help your students achieve those benefits of collaboration?
E-Community of Learners • Engaging reluctant students and promoting "more egalitarian classrooms” • Enabling activities that were previously not possible, e.g., Corresponding with "experts" • Increase students’ comprehension of issues through contact with "real" people in "real" places. • Building inter-cultural understanding and tolerance.
Examples of Telecollaboration • Collaborative writing/ Project management: • Google doc: project report, learning languages, collective writing • Wiki: daily journals, recording project outputs • In-class/out of class discussion: • Text-based discussion: Email, Wikispaces, Facebook • Discussion on multimedia materials: Voicethread • Live discussion at remote: Skype, Twitter, MSN
Your Role in Collaboration What would be your role in this kind of collaborative learning?
Principles for Successful Collaborative Learning (with/out ICT) • Clarify learning goals and always bear them in mind throughout the learning activities • Pedagogy first then choose technologies!!!! • Set up roles (coordinator, commenter, recorder, searcher, etc) • Specify rules (evaluation rubrics) • Force students to reach consensus before taking any action • Encourage participation by mentioning students’ different comments in class • Reflection, reflection, reflection! (you and your students)
Weakness or Risk in Collaborative Learning What do you think would be weakness of collaborative learning? • Student learning is inevitably limited to the student knowledge. • They may pass on their own misconceptions to others. Keep monitoring your students’ progress!!!!
Some useful tips to manage and facilitate telecollaboration • # of students in groups • Structured worksheets • Brainstorm and work with pencil and paper first. • Use your student as resource person • Privacy and safety

Activity • Choose one component of your PBL lesson plan and try to enhance student collaboration by adding ICTs. Always remember that you don’t use ICT for the sake of using ICT. Keep asking yourself whether and to what extent your lesson plan would benefit from using ICT. Your tasks for the rest of the day: • Identify the activities that you want to use TCL • Justify why you want to add TCL (benefits?) • Name tools that you want to use for your TCL • Specify your role in this activity (and your strategies) => 10 min presentation starting at 4:00pm!!!
Homework!!! • Upload what you produced so far to the wiki site. Don’t forget to divide work and specify roles among yourselves!!! (writer, uploader, commenter, etc.) • If possible, read and comment on other groups’ postings.
