  1. Research

  2. AKA: • What I think will happen if… • Educated guess • Likely outcome Hypothesis

  3. More complicated and detailed – easier to research and prove right or wrong… • Students who eat school lunches are fatter than those who don’t OR • Students who eat unhealthy food during the day including school lunches AND/OR who don’t exercise as much as their non-school lunch peers are more likely to be fatter Hypothesis

  4. Try this… • What do you hypothesise would happen if…? Hypothesis

  5. I designed and implemented an efficient method of collecting relevant data to test hypotheses (e.g. an on-line data collection form). • I devised, explained and used appropriate data validation rules to reduce input errors. • I selected and used appropriate test data to make sure my database file works properly. Target Level for this assignment

  6. I have checked and evaluated my data against other information sources • I have explained why the style and content of my presentation was suitable for the rest of the class. • My presentation includes a master slide and hyperlinks to external documents. Target Level for this assignment

  7. Your research project: we need to choose – • A question or problem • A way of researching it that is sensible and SMART Hypothesis

  8. Examples (You can do one of these if you want – I’ve only started it so you don’t get much benefit!) • SIMPLE EXAMPLE Most people (i.e. more than 50%) who were given computer games/consoles as gifts last month will have become bored by them by the end of the school holiday. • COMPLEX EXAMPLE Most people (i.e. more than 50%) who were given computer games/consoles as gifts last month will have become bored by them by the end of the school holiday AND those people who were bored did not get any physical exercise (like cycling or walking) during the break. Hypothesis

  9. Easiest way to find out what people think? • Easiest way to record what people think so you can analyse it later? Research

  10. Types of questions – • OPEN and CLOSED • LEADING and MISLEADING • COMPLICATED • MULTIPLE CHOICE Research

  11. Decide what you will research (you could use my ideas if you’re stuck: if you have something better then go with it!) • Decide HOW you will research it • What questions will you ask? • Whom will you ask? • Complete the proposal form and email it to me before the end of class Your turn…
