Responsive Classroom • Philosophy: equal importance placed on social and academic learning • Components: Morning Meeting, Interactive Modeling, Guided Discovery, Student generated rules, CARES • Goals: • Achieve Hopes and Dreams • Intrinsic Motivation • Develop problem solving skills for social situations • Every action has a consequence: • Positive: • Make friends • Stay safe • Lots of learning! • Negative: • Take a Break • Loss of privilege • You break it, you fix it • Apology of action Belonging, Significance, and Fun

First Grade Curriculum • Social Studies and Science units are integrated throughout the curriculum and are taught with hands-on activities, picture books, and class discussion. • Investigation Station • Science City • Workshop model is used for reading, writing, phonics, and math. • Same structure is used for each: • Mini-lesson • Independent practice while teacher leads 1:1 conferences or small groups • Closure • Workshop provides opportunities for student choice

  4. Homework Primary goal is to promote responsible work habits • Homework goes home on Monday • Completed homework returns to school on Friday • Homework Menu • Reading, writing, and math • 20 minutes of reading per night

  5. Nuts and Bolts • Communication • Bloomz- used for sign-ups & volunteers • Monthly Newsletter and ASFS website • Notes/Emails • Friday Folders • Special Events • Birthdays • Snack

Getting Involved Fall & Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences October 24th and 25th (Fall) Sign-ups posted to Bloomz 1st week of October Friday Fresh snacks (sign up on Bloomz) Pre-cut, individual servings if possible 22 students Chaperone a Field Trip (sign up on Bloomz) Kennedy Center– December American History Museum – February Botanic Garden - April Volunteer Opportunities Classroom Fund $20.00 for field trips and classroom celebrations. 3 field trips Celebrations: Halloween, Global Holiday celebration, Valentine’s Day, and End of Year celebration.
