  1. OCTOBER 10THWORLD LITERATURE Turn in Punctuation Packet homework on the stool! In the past few texts we’ve read, we’ve seen people or characters go through difficult times/circumstances in life. In one paragraph (at least 7 sentences), describe a difficult circumstance that you have been through in your life (a challenge, a loss, a fight, a disappointment, etc.) that made life difficult to live as usual.

  2. REMINDERS • Homework: Pg. 43 in Interactive Reader. • Non-English portfolios are due to me (signed by your teacher) on Oct. 18th. • Make sure that you have gotten a portfolio assignment from ALL your teachers; if not, talk to them. • If a teacher says that a) they’re not giving you portfolios or b) they don’t know what that is, I need to know before Friday. • Take notes on the following and title these notes, “Adversity Notes” • Remember: Keep all notes in one specific place in your binder with the title and date on them. They will be collected at the end of the semester.

  3. STANDARDS Literary Response and Analysis 3.2: Compare and contrast the presentation of a similar theme or topic across genres…

  4. ADVERSITY Candy for anyone who can answer the following: What is adversity?

  5. ADVERSITY Adversity = hardship, or extreme misfortune that seems to be fated rather than deserved; an unfortunate event or circumstance that causes pain and makes it difficult to live as usual.

  6. ADVERSITY • What examples of adversity or adverse situations can you come up with?

  7. ADVERSITY • Examples of adversity: • Poverty • Loss or death of a loved one • Unfair or biased treatment • discrimination based on race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, etc. • Natural adversity • Hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, lack of rain, etc. • Abuse • physical, emotional, sexual, neglect • Depression • Loss of personal possessions (theft, fire, etc.)

  8. ADVERSITY • Our semester question: How do different cultures handle adversity? • If adversity can be overcome, how? • If adversity can not be overcome, why? • How difficult is it to overcome adversity? • Can everyone always overcome adversity? Why/why not? • As we continue to read works of World Literature, we will explore this topic.

  9. ADVERSITY • Let’s examine how adversity plays out in the stories that we have read so far. • Choose three of the texts listed below. • “The Creation and the Fall” from Genesis • The Epic of Gilgamesh • “Noah and the Flood” from Genesis • The Rig Veda • In one paragraph, discuss the similar message that all three texts have about adversity. Use evidence from the stories to prove this similarity in adversity that all three texts have.

  10. ADVERSITY PARAGRAPH Organize your paragraph like so: Topic Sentence: Statement about the similarity in adversity in all three texts. Explain/commentary: Explain/expand on anything that needs further explanation/expansion in topic sentence. Example/evidence/concrete detail: Give an example (either quote or summary of a specific event) from one text. Explain/commentary: Explain what this example proves about adversity. Example/evidence/concrete detail: An example from the second text. Explain/commentary: Explain what second example proves about adversity. Example/evidence/concrete detail: An example from the last text. Explain/commentary: Explain what the third example proves about adversity. Wrap-up: Concluding sentence– summary of what statement is being given about adversity. *Each part should be at least one sentence, but you may expand a part to more than one sentence, if needed. *Remember your writing rules… (no “I,” “me,” “my,” “you,” “your,”; lead into quotes; give in-text citations).
