Central to “The Quest” • A shared vision of the future that the donor helps articulate, which: • Inspires people with what is possible • Gives them confidence and energy to make it happen
Key characteristics of “The Quest” • The “provocative propositions” that capture donors’ imagination are generated by conversations about their most cherished experiences, values and aspirations
Key characteristics of “The Quest” • The “transformative commitment” is an act of moral leadership. It can raise the sights of all donors by redefining worth and stature of the organization • Through the Quest, we invite donors to become true partners and collaborators by inviting them to do something important with us
Key characteristics of “The Quest” • If we want better relationships, we must have fewer. Just as we select our personal friends, we can select our philanthropic partners • We succeed in attracting resources to our organization to the extent that we bring meaninginto the lives of donors and volunteers
Key characteristics of the Quest • We create a positive, appreciative and generative dialogue with and among members • Rather than incremental advances, we strive for breakthrough philanthropy that sets new standards for the organization and those who are watching
Appreciative Inquiry: An approach used to find out the successes and things at their best. We: • Identify what works and find ways to infuse more of it into the organization • Try to develop and hold an image in our mind of what we’ve done exceptionally well • Affirm the smallest successes and triumphs, which enable us to hold a positive image of • End result: We understand those “life-giving forces” that provide vitality and distinctive competence to an organization
The Power of Appreciate Inquiry Confucius would have us involve people, actively if we seek to influence them: “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.
The Power When you listen to somebody else, whether you like it or not, what they say becomes a part of you…The common pool is created,…At some pint people become recognizing that the common pool is more important than their separate pools. David Bohm
Focusing on when the organization was at its best: • Builds organizational self—esteem and potency • Encourages donors to value the organization more highly
