  9. delaying: slowing down The bad weather was delaying the start of the flight, it slowed down all the passengers.

  10. Guaranteed: definite Sally’s spot in the play was guaranteed because she was the only one who tried out for that part, she was definitely going to get it!

Make sure you support with text. • Think of a good question up to this point to ask someone in the classroom. An example would be: Why is Nick nervous?

(Characterization) • Why did Mrs. Granger send a letter home before the start of class? • How did Nick’s mother react to the letter? • Make a prediction, with evidence about what will happen next in the story.
