  2. New World • The name that became popular in Europe in the 1500’s referring to what is now North and South America

  3. Mission Period • From 1568-1684, the Spanish set up missions (churches) on North America to convert Native Americans to Christianity. • De Soto's Impact

  4. Hernando de Soto • Spanish conquistador who was the first European explorer of Georgia. He was directly responsible for the starving and killing of a large number of Native American and the spread of diseases. • De Soto's Impact

  5. smallpox • An infectious disease carried by European explorers that had a devastating impact on Native American population.

  6. production • the act of making or harvesting a product or a good. (example- rice and indigo)

  7. distribution • the act of moving, shipping, or selling a product/good.

  8. consumption • the act of buying or using a product/good. (example- eating rice)

  9. God, Gold, and Glory • Spain wanted to convert Native Americans to Christianity, the conquistadors were looking for personal fortunate and fame, and the Spanish Monarchy wanted to bring as much gold into their treasury as possible

  10. mercantilism • the theory that a nation must export more than they import. This led many European countries to establish colonies to provide products for distribution and consumption.

  11. fur trade • The primary interests of the early French explorers was the trapping and selling of animal fur from North America.
