  1. Body Planes and Directions

  2. Body planes Body planes are imaginary lines/planes that divide the body.

  3. 4 Body Planes • Sagittal (Midline)= divides the body into equal right and left halves (xz plane on the diagram).

  4. 4 Body Planes • Sagittal (Midline)= divides the body into equal right and left halves (xz plane on the diagram). • Midsagittal= divides the body into unequal right and left halves.

  5. 4 Body Planes • Sagittal (Midline)= divides the body into equal right and left halves (xz plane on the diagram). • Midsagittal= divides the body into unequal right and left halves. • Coronal= divides the body into anterior and posterior (front and back).YZ plane on the diagram.

  6. 4 Body Planes • Sagittal (Midline)= divides the body into equal right and left halves (xz plane on the diagram). • Midsagittal= divides the body into unequal right and left halves. • Coronal= divides the body into anterior and posterior (front and back). YZ plane on the diagram • Transverse= divides the body into superior and inferior portions. Upper and lower. XY plane on the diagram

  7. Body Directions • Medial- towards the midline.

  8. Body Directions • Medial- towards the midline. • Lateral- away from the midline

  9. Body Directions • Medial- towards the midline. • Lateral- away from the midline • Posterior/Dorsal=towards the back

  10. Body Directions • Medial- towards the midline. • Lateral- away from the midline • Posterior/Dorsal=towards the back • Anterior/Ventral=towards the front

  11. Body Directions • Medial- towards the midline. • Lateral- away from the midline • Posterior/Dorsal=towards the back • Anterior/Ventral=towards the front • Superior=towards the head, above the transverse line

  12. Body Directions • Medial- towards the midline. • Lateral- away from the midline • Posterior/Dorsal=towards the back • Anterior/Ventral=towards the front • Superior=towards the head, above the transverse line • Inferior=towards the feet, below the transverse line

  13. Body Directions • Proximal=situated near the midline or the beginning of a body structure.

  14. Body Directions • Proximal=situated near the midline or the beginning of a body structure. • Distal=situated farthest from the midline, or end of a body structure.

  15. Body Directions • Cranial-towards the head

  16. Body Directions • Cranial-towards the head. • Caudal-towards the feet.
