Notebook Support Survival CPIS 210 John Beckett
What Type of User? User Document Location USB Drive DropBox USB Drive DropBox Hard drive (backed up) USB Drive DropBox • Occasional check-out for a trip or event • Road Warrior • Lives on a Laptop Access to an external, encrypted data store is essential for notebook security
Screws • Book’s procedure is good • Tape screws to a copy of the disassembly guide • JB answer: • Take digital pictures at each stage, print out, and tape screws to them
Heating / Noise • Fan noise is a symptom of over-heating or under-engineering • Look for laptops that can run cool
Tools • Extensive screwdriver set • Another set to lend • Large USB-connected hard drive • External USB-connected DVD/CD
Labels • JB: “Every good site has somebody who is a pathological labeler” • Label supplies cost money, but keep them in stock • You want a label identifying something that was left behind, so you’ll hear about it before somebody lacking in morals steals the device
Notebook, Call Home • Consider software that will contact you or a vendor periodically • Traceroute can be used to get an idea where it is • iOS “Find my iPhone” is great for devices with GPS capability • Perhaps use the software to destroy info on hard drive?
The Plan • Cookie-cutter laptops with a specific load of software • Cell-network access to the Internet, with WiFi or wired used when available • Documents and configuration on external service • Avoids lost-USB problem • Always require a password to boot
