Why Texas? • COTTON! • Southern States want Texas because it supports slavery • America was also afraid Texas would ally with Britain.
The Migration • Mexico broke from Spain in 1821 and settled in Texas. • One year later American Steven Austin got permission to settle in Texas as long as they followed Mex. Law and would convert to Roman catholic. • 1830- Austin had 30,000 Americans in Texas
Migration cont… • 1831 Mexico didn’t allow any more immigrates come to Texas. • So Americans brought slaves to help production. • The Mexicans were getting mad that they didn’t become Catholics and they were outnumbered 10 to 1.
The Start • General Antonio Lopez was elected as Mexican president in 1833 • The same time a rebellion started in Texas. • Sam Huston - the Military Leader in Texas.
Santa Anna • Santa Anna was a famous general in the Alamo. He was the leader of Mexico Army. • 1835 Santa Anna brought more than 2000 men to Texas to push Texans out. • After 2 weeks Texans started to retreat.
REMEMBER THE ALAMO • Mexico Army followed Huston and the Texans to the San Jacinto Creek. • Huston turned and surprise attacked Santa Anna. • The Texas Army yelled “Remember the Alamo”
Lies… • Huston captured Santa Anna • Under pressure Anna signed a treaty accepting Texas Independence • As soon as Santa Anna got free he denied ever signing the treaty. • And went against his word.
Lone Star Republic • 1836 Texas declared itself as a Lone Star Republic. • Texas asked to join the United States in 1836. • The North thought it was a plan to increase slavery support. • The Senate didn’t get a 2/3 vote. • The Treaty was denied.
Lone Star Republic cont… • Again in 1843 Texas retried. • President Tyler feared that Texas would ally with the British. So they could have the cotton. Tyler also feared if they accepted the treaty it would cause war with Mexico. • The Senate rejected the treaty again 35-16.
Solution • James Polk of Tennessee went to Congress with a joint resolution to accept Texas as a state. • Joint Resolution- requires the majority of both houses of congress. • Treaty- requires 2/3 vote of only Senate
December 1845 the Lone Star Republic (Texas) became the 28th state.
Conflict • The border between Texas and Mexico was undetermined • They both tried to claim more land • Mexico threatened war!
