Explain)

  2. US annexation of Hawaii (Why did the US want HA.) • *Crossroads of the Pacific- location in middle of Pac. Make it ideal for trade with Asia • *Pearl Harbor is a perfect natural harbor to hold naval ships • *Sugar becomes a profitable crop • *Japan may take it if the US did not

  3. Economy of Hawaii • Sugar- American owned sugar plantation created ¾’s of Hawaii’s wealth • Ethnic Groups- sugar growers brought in Japanese, Portuguese, and Chinese laborers • *Outnumbered native Hawaiians 3:1 • US Planters- forced Ha. King to change constitution to allow only wealthy landowners to vote • *Control of Hawaiian government was given to Americans

  4. McKinley Tariff of 1890- US growers in Hawaii, because Hawaii was not part of the US, were forced to sell their sugar extra in the US (had to compete with American growers) • What is a way that American sugar growers in HA could get around the tariff (tax) on HA produced sugar sold in the US? • *Solution- US planters wanted to make Hawaii (an independent country) a part of the US

  5. Hawaiian Revolution • Queen Liliuokalani- wanted to create a new constitution that would give power back to the Hawaiians • US Planters- organized a revolution against the queen • USS Boston- steamed to Hawaii with US marines • US Ambassador John Stevens ordered the Marines ashore to “Protect” US property • Queen Lili. was imprisoned in her own palace by US Marines • Stanford B. Dole was named president • What do you think the US reaction will be to finding out that Americans have taken over and “Liberated” HA?

  6. US reaction- President Cleveland realized US planters started an “unjust war” and ordered Queen Lili. to be put back in power • Now what would you do if you were an American grower do that just took over HA. but the US does not want to annex? • Republic Of Hawaii (1893) US planters made Hawaii their own country (wanted to still be annexed by US, they will just wait for a new President that will want to annex HA) • Annexation- (1898) with a new President, US annexes Hawaii during Spanish American War
