The issue: We have found that many youth suffer a lot of anxiety when leaving our program. As a center, we have provided a safe, secure and healthy environment. Returning home is a major challenge to maintaining a healthy lifestyle amongst many of the young clients reintegrating back into the community. • peer pressure, • home situation, • support services,
Youth face numerous challenges after graduating from Treatment. • The change in attitude towards substance abuse is often viewed as a rejection by friends made during substance abuse. • Community service institutions are not necessarily a youth’s favorite place for fear of being judged. • This kind of pressure has resulted in many youth relapsing and taking up old habits again. • Finding and integrating into new activities that can be • alternatives to substance abuse can be a challenge
Our goal: to develop a framework and assist communities develop protocols that would provide a blanket of support to youth seeking to maintain a healthy lifestyle following treatment.
How do we intent to do this. The Walgwan Center team will develop a framework of core components that are based on the medicine Wheel and continuity. Communities working with the Walgwan Center will be provided with a framework which should be used as a guide to building community support protocols for youth returning to the community from treatment. youth
Community protocols will serve to establish a team including community members and community resources with specific roles in support of recovering youth. These protocols will be activated during the youth’s preparation phase for reintegration back into the community. Resource people will be called upon to fulfill their role as defined in their community protocol.
Through the use of video conferencing technology the youth will establish a face to face connection with resource people from the community that have demonstrated a desire to support the youth and assist in the preparation of his community reintegration and maintain a healthy life style.
