FAIRMODE ForumforAIRQualityMOdellinginEurope • Is a joint initiative of the EEA (A&T) and the EC’s Joint Research Centre (JRC; IES). • Aims at responding to the requirements of the new CAFE (AQ) Directive. • Focuses particularly on the introduction of modelling as necessary tool for AQ assessment and management. • Aims at bringing together AQ modellers and model users to promote and support harmonized use of modelling by EU Member States and EEA Member Countries.
The structure of FAIRMODE FAIRMODE is lead by a Steering Committee jointly chaired by the EEA, DG-JRC and DG-ENV.
FAIRMODE Steering Committee(Established in April ‘08) European Commission, Andrej Kobe, Panagiota Dilara (JRC) EEA, Anke Lükewille ETC-ACC, Nicolas Moussiopoulos (AUT), Bruce Denby (NILU) EEA EIONET Experts, Sari Lappi, Evrim Dogan,Nathalie Poisson, Ana Isabel Miranda,Josef Keder Other Experts,Leonor Tarrason, Helge Rørdam Olesen,Laurence Rouil, Ranjeet Sokhi, Peter Builtjes
Objectives of FAIRMODE • To produce guidanceon the use of air quality models for assessing current and future air quality for the purposes of complying with Air Quality Directive and in preparation to the revision of this Directive • To study and set-up a system for the quality assurance and the continuous improvements of air quality models • To make recommendations for further research and other relevant improvements, such as improvements on emission inventories, meteorology, boundary conditions, temporal and geographic scale
FAIRMODE’s activities • Provide guidance to present and future model users in EEA’s EIONET partnership network. Activity lead by EEA - ETC/ACC (WG1). “Guidance in the use of models for European air quality directive assessments” (draft) • Enhance awareness of model usefulness, reliability and accuracy (model validation, inter-comparison exercises). Activity lead by EC – JRC (WG2). “Scoping paper on quality assurance of models in relation to EU air quality directives” (draft)
FAIRMODE’s activities • Plenary Meetings (= FAIRMODE open activity): • Experts from EU Member States and EEA Member (& cooperating) Countries • Co-chaired by EEA and JRC • Hosted by the Meteorological and Hydrological Service of • Croatia (Zagreb) and the JRC • First meeting on 10th October in Cavtat, Croatia (back to back with the 12th HARMO Conference) • FAIRMODE is meant to be a long-term activity as opposed to COST actions and EU research projects.
??? … Contribute actively! • Who is the community, who is the network aimed at? • What does a network participant gain from being involved in this network? What do they need to do? • How to most successfully and effectively involve the EU Member States in the network? • How will the results of the network’s work be disseminated (EEA Air Data Centre, website, newsletter etc.)?
??? … Contribute actively! • Will the activities of the network eventually lead to 'accredited' models and/or model users? • To what extend is the European Commission involved in these activities? • What are the links to KOPERNIKUS (atmosphere, meteorology, land-cover, others), COST actions, the EU’s Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7)? • What are FAIRMODE’s objectives or results expected in the coming years?
