Books to Purchase • Oedipus Rex, translated by Stephen Berg • Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare • It is not required for you to purchase these books, but it is highly recommended • Dates will be assigned as each piece is needed
Grading • Please allow 1 week for assignments to be put in to the grade book • Grades are updated once a set of an assignment is completely graded • Refer to the following key for some grades: • INC= work has not yet been turned in and is a zero , but can still be made up for credit • EXE= assignment is excused and does not need to be made up • [BLANK]= the student has turned in the assignment and the grade should be entered soon
SSR (Self Selected Reading) • Why do we do it? • Research proves the more that students read on for pleasure, the better they will do in class, on standardized tests (AP, SAT, ACT, TAKS, etc) • What is expected? • Students will be given time in class to read, but they should also be reading at home. • Students will be expected to participate in numerous activities in class based on their SSR book • Books may be checked out from the library, Mrs. Johnson or brought from home • Students have 15 minutes of each and every day during 3rd period to participate in SSR and should be prepared
EOC/STAAR: Monday, March 31 • Reading & Writing Test • Students will write three 1 page essays • 30 multiple choice questions on revising and editing strategies • 3-4 Reading selections– approx. 3,000 words • ALL GENRES ASSESSED (poetry, fiction, drama, non-fiction, etc.) • 40 multiple choice questions • 2 Written Open Ended Response questions Students have SIX HOURS to complete the test
How is English 1 PreAP differentthan Language Arts PreAP? • More Writing • Writing Workshop is set in place for students to become more sufficient writers • Students will be writing on a weekly basis • More Homework • Much of this will be completing what we don’t in class or reading in preparation for the next class period • Less time to finish work in class • Less Grades and More Accountability
