The power of oneMath from a different angle • “We are all woven together in a single garment of destiny.” Dr. Martin Luther King
Objective and Goal • Using at least 3 different numbers students will create a mathematical model of the exponential power of a number • Using math manipulative material students will explore the concrete model of the power of a number ( a grain of rice doubled each square of a chess board). • Students will participate actively in a discussion about the exponential power of a historical event, a personality, an idea, or a scientific fact, a word such as “ahimsa” or “satyagraha” • Students will write a personal statement to reflect the collective brainstorming • Students will apply the notion to the power of their own beliefs by making a small piece of a classroom quilt of “everyone counts”. • Goal: To extend the concept of the immense scope of the exponential power of a unit.
Questions to consider: • What is my understanding of the power of a number? • What is the collective scope of every unit? • How does this math concept apply to my life? • How does each individual force become a collective power? • Is my voice valid? Does it count? Does it have a value? • How do my thought/ word/action affect others? All of us?

Objective and Goal • Objective: • Student will identify the biotic and abiotic factors in their environment • students will give two specific examples to illustrate the interconnectedness between these factors • students will list at least three human activities with negative impact on the environment • students will include a positive personal commitment that will promote the preservation of the environment and reverence for all life • the idea of “caretaker of the environment” as discussed in different religions along with the golden rule as a “caretaker of your brother” • students will create and present a PowerPoint presentation to document their investigation and commitment • Goal: To promote student awareness and positive active involvement in personal environment.
Pedagogical context • To promote student awareness and positive active involvement in personal environment. • Students will be able to infer the direct correlation between cause and effect in the environment • Students will be able to analyze the long term effects of specific phenomenon in a particular ecosystem and the environment as a whole • Empower the students as active participants in their environment • Students will be able to make a connection between the book learning and its experiential transformation in their immediate environment. • Classroom brainstorming can include character education • Enhance the classroom self-discipline rule of respect and responsibility • Stretch the historical and global perspectives of young minds
Everyone counts • Create self-awareness • Encourage active nonviolent involvement • Realize experiential application of learning • Have courage to take charge for personal and global issues • Promoting respect and responsibility • Believe in self-worth of all lives • Affirm independent thinking
