Alternative Thread during the Kennedy and Johnson AdministrationsSpecial Education • The Presidential Panel on Mental Retardation was active during both administrations. • Focus was primarily on medical research not on education. • Panel called for expanded programs in research, training and pre-natal care. • Also “recommended creation of a domestic Peace Corps to combat mental retardation and other social problems.” • Eunice Kennedy Shriver spearheaded non-profit efforts to educate children with intellectual disabilities.

  2. Eunice Kennedy Shriver • Instrumental in focusing the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation on the way society deals with citizens with intellectual disabilities. • June 1962 – Camp Shriver, a day camp at Timberlawn, her home in Rockville, MD. • Provided the model for Special Olympics. • First Special Olympics was held July 20, 1968 at Chicago’s Soldier Field with 1000 athletes from 26 states and Canada competing in aquatics, athletics and floor hockey. • “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Special Olympics Milestones • The Law Enforcement Torch Run begins to fundraise for Special Olympics. • The International Olympic Committed signs a historic agreement in Feb. 1988 officially recognizing Special Olympics. • The Clinton Administration held the first gala at the White House recognizing the phenomenal works of Special Olympics. • October 30, 2004 – George W. Bush signs the Special Olympics Sport and Empowerment Act into law. • Special Olympics is a global movement with more than 2.25 million athletes in 150 countries.
